PREMIER DALTON MCGUINTY INAUGURATES
THE NEW MONTFORT

OTTAWA, June 11, 2010 – Today, the Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, took part in the official opening ceremony for the New Montfort, following the end of construction on this major expansion to the Montfort Hospital.

Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services and Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, was also in attendance, along with several other dignitaries.

The New Montfort expansion project is not only the biggest in the hospital’s history—it is also the largest infrastructure project in the history of French-speaking Ontario.

This enormous $300-million construction has added 450,000 square feet of space, for a total of 750,000 square feet, or triple the size of the original structure built in 1953. The New Montfort is now home to 289 acute care beds in total. So far, since the groundbreaking in 2006, the hospital staff has jumped from 900 to 1,500 employees.

The Chief of Staff, Dr. Guy Moreau, says the hospital can now take better care of the community: “The Montfort of 2010 is an intensive care unit with double the capacity, having gone from 6 to 12 beds. It is also a fully renovated emergency room that will go from 35,000 to 56,000 visits per year thanks to its enhanced facilities, which are twice as big as before. The Montfort of 2010 is a hospital that is improving access to and quality of care through revolutionary technologies, such as magnetic resonance imaging, digital mammography and nuclear medicine. It is a brand new surgery room entirely dedicated to advanced laparoscopic surgery. It is also a sleep lab that is increasing access to a variety of essential services for residents of Ontario.”

For Dr. Bernard Leduc, President and CEO of Montfort Hospital, the physical expansion means vastly improved access to high-quality health care services for the community. “The New Montfort is about more than just service delivery; it is a teaching hospital where education and research are central to its activities. Through its new research institute and by its affiliations with academic institutions such as the University of Ottawa and La Cité collégiale, Montfort is furthering the expertise and training of our future healthcare providers.” In fact, each year, Montfort welcomes some 500 students from 36 different disciplines, including 180 medical students. The Residency Program in Family Medicine has gone from 12 to 24 residents per year, becoming one of the largest residency programs in family medicine in Canada.
