Unprecedented Development

Quick link: Progress Report on the Current Development Project

On July 26, 2005, Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, announced his government’s support for Hôpital Montfort’s dramatic expansion plans. The "New Montfort" is not only the largest development project in the history of the hospital but also the largest infrastructure project in Franco-Ontarian history.

This official announcement ushered in a new era that allowed Montfort, the only Francophone teaching hospital west of Quebec, to adopt a unique approach to achieving excellence on a national scale.

The new buildings under construction, slated to open in the summer of 2008, are only one component of this massive development project. The entire project, costing $286 million, will add 450,000 square feet to the hospital, more than doubling the existing space. The total square footage of 750,000 square feet is triple the size of the building originally constructed in 1953. By 2011, the New Montfort will offer a total of 289 acute care beds and the number of employees will increase from 950 to at least 1,500.

This major development project will lead to:

  • a 54% increase in the number of acute care beds;
  • a 100% increase in the number of intensive care beds (from 6 to 12 beds);
  • an increase from 7 to 11 operating rooms;
  • an increase in the size of the Emergency Department from 8,425 to 22,000 square feet;
  • a 475% increase in the size of outpatient clinics;
  • a 59% increase in the number of births;
  • a 73% increase in the number of visits to the Emergency Department;
  • an 83% increase in the number of surgeries;
  • a 65% increase in the number of ambulatory care procedures;
  • an 84% increase in the number of examinations, visits and diagnostic tests;
  • a 100% increase in capacity for the mental health program (from 30 to 60 beds).

The development project is slated for completion in spring 2010.

A Healing Approach

In addition to increasing the volume of services, the development project at the New Montfort has provided the hospital with a unique opportunity to improve its quality of care by focusing on the patient and implementing the best known practices in the healthcare field. Montfort strives to be recognized as a patient-focused or healing hospital.

Since its founding, Montfort’s core values of compassion and caring are a testimony to its healing approach. Systematic and concerted efforts to implement the best practices will allow this healing approach to flourish at the New Montfort.
